Google Launching “Next Dimension Of Google Maps”
Since the online launch of Google Maps we have seen this space develop at a rapid rate.
Prior to there being a relatively straightforward competition between Google and Microsoft (with OpenStreetMap and a few other smaller rivals standing on the sidelines) there will become a far more complex scenario now that Apple is likely to reveal its own solution at its WWDC later this month.
Google, it appears, is attempting to steal Apple’s thunder and is hosting an invite-only press event in San Francisco where the company promises to unveil “the next dimension of Google Maps.”
The invitation also notes that Google will provide attendees with a much sought after “ behind-the-scenes look at Google Maps” which will see them demo some of the newest technology and provide a sneak peek at upcoming features that will help people get to where they want to go – ”both physically and virtually.”
Considering that Apple is rifely rumoured to be dropping Google Maps in iOS6 in favour of its own solution with a focus on 3D maps, it’s hard not to think of Google announcing “the next dimension of Google Maps” without considering the aspect of 3D features.
Google Maps, of course, already lets you switch to Google Earth in the browser.
It is important to note however, that this feature only works once you have installed a plugin.
It is possible this update will bring functionality directly to the browser through WebGL. Google could also add more 3D buildings and trees, or update Street View with a more virtual world-like look.
Whatever it is, we will keep you posted on the developments on the event next week.
