BP was yesterday accused of being unethical, as they used PPC to try to dampen the effect the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has had on their brand’s reputation. The company has been purchasing ppc keywords like “oil spill”, “deepwater horizon” and “gulf of mexico” so that when a user types in these terms they will receive a BP Ad that directs them to the BP’s official page on their respnse to the oil spil. It is estimated that these terms are costing them around $10,000 dollars a day to stay in top positions.
