2008 saw continued growth in online ad spend

Exerpt from the IAB email we received yesterday:

Yes, it’s that time of year again – the eagerly anticipated online adspend figures for the whole of 2008 are now with us, and in the midst of these testing economic times, all eyes have been on our research department to provide us with some good news…

And it is good news. Our findings reveal that internet advertising continues to buck wider industry trends, with spend rising 17% year-on-year to £3.35bn in 2008. These figures show that the internet was the only advertising medium to experience growth last year, with online market share rising to 19.2%. In fact, in the second half of 2008, the internet’s share of all advertising spend actually peaked at 19.8%, overtaking total press display (that’s all newspapers and magazines combined). What’s more, spending online increased by £540 million year-on-year, a hugely impressive figure when you consider that it was achieved against a challenging backdrop which has seen total UK advertising spend fall by 3.5% in 2008 to £17.5bn.
